Dannie's Dilemmas The Shopping Trip
BOOK SUMMARY
In ‘The Shopping Trip’ Dannie has some pocket money to spend and
Dannie’s mother has promised to take her shopping for a new toy.
Dannie has problems organising herself to get ready to go out and
constantly gets distracted and sidetracked.
Dannie’s mother explains to Dannie that they have to go to a few shops
before Dannie’s shop. During this time Dannie gets impatient and bored, all
Dannie wants to do is go to her shop.
While in a sweet shop Dannie finds it difficult to understand the shop
assistant and takes what the shop assistant says literally and finds herself in trouble.
Dannie eventually makes it to the toy shop, she is overwhelmed by the amount of toys to choose from and thus Dannie’s Dilema begins, should she ask for her mothers help or should she choose for herself? The reader will choose her decision.
INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BOOK
The idea behind the shopping trip, well I suppose it has many factors, for the children I wanted to show that we understand the difficulty they face in having to wait their turn and that making decisions can be hard at times. we wanted to show that Dannie has the same ideas and thoughts as they do hopefully making it clear that there are ways round the difficulties that they face on a daily basis.
For the parents we tried to show the childs prospective on how what we say can be taken in many different views and hopefully show that sometimes what the child says is not meant to be argumentative or said to cause trouble.
EXTRACT FROM THE SHOPPING TRIP
It’s Saturday today and I’ve been up since
seven o’clock, I’m very excited. I’ve been saving up all my pocket money for
three weeks and Mum said she would take me to the shops today.
“Are you dressed yet?”
That’s Mum, always calling when I’m in the middle of doing something.
“Just putting my jeans on.”Dannie was hopping round the bedroom trying to get her leg into her
jeans.
Today I’ve decided to be a tomboy, my friends said that you are either a girly girl or a tomboy, I’ve decided to be both because sometimes I like to dress like a girl and wear lipstick and sometimes I don’t so I like being both.
“Now where did I put my trainers?” Dannie rummaged through her toys and clothes throwing things over her
shoulder.
Why is it when you put things somewhere safe tthat you’ll remember, when you need them you can’t remember where that safe place is. I always do that.
“Think, think, think.”Dannie scratched her head. “Where did I put them?”
“Dannie are you ready yet?”Dannie’s mum called for the second time.
“I’m just looking for my trainers, I can’t find them.” Dannie yelled.
“Well where did you have them last?” Dannie’s mum questioned.
Dannie stood with her hands on her hips.
Isn’t that a silly thing to ask, if I knew where I left them, they wouldn’t be lost.
“I’ve found them Dannie” Dannie’s mum called from the kitchen. “They are next to the fridge, why on earth did you put them there.”
Ah now I remember, I put them next to the fridge so that when I go for a drink I would see them and remember that’s where they are, but I haven’t had a drink today, that’s why I couldn’t find them.
Dannie ran down the stairs. “Just coming Mum.”
Now we can go shopping, YES!!
Dannie sat on the kitchen floor and put on her trainers.
“Where are your glasses, have you got your purse? And you’ll need a jacket it’s really cold today.”Dannie’s mum reminded.
What? How am I supposed to remember all that, Mum knows that I’m really forgetful?
"Pardon mum, I didn’t hear you.” Dannie smiled.
It’s less embarrassing if you just say you didn’t hear.
Dannie’s mum huffed and shook her head. “Glasses, purse and jacket Dannie.”
Ok that’s a bit easier, glasses, pjacket, glasses, purse, jacket, glasses, purse, jacket.
Dannie mumbled to herself all the way upstairs again; when she got into her bedroom she spotted a toy she had lost a few days earlier.
My Scottie dog, I was wondering where that had gone, I’ve been looking for that for ages. Oh no, what was that list again?
I’ve forgotten it now. I know, I’ll look round the room and maybe I’ll remember when I see them.
Dannie looked all around the room, trying really hard to remember her list.
“Dannie, what on earth are you doing, you’ve been up there fifteen minutes, how long does it take to find a pair of glasses, a purse and your jacket?” Dannie’s mum yelled upstairs.
“I’ll be down in a minute Mum; I’m just putting my jacket on.” Dannie called back.
Thank you Mum, now let’s see, glasses, purse and jacket.
Dannie found her things and rushed back down stairs.
“What shops are we going to today?” Dannie questioned.
I like to know where we are going, that way I know how long it will be before I get to my shop and know when we will be coming back home.
